Recognising the historic gap between tertiary education and real-world fieldwork, GeoGroup, UCP, and IMDEX recently collaborated on a 3-day drilling training programme. Aimed specifically at Honours and Masters Geology students from the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), the course was designed to bring future geologists and active site contractors together. Bridging this gap on a tertiary level not only allows for and expands the understanding of drilling works on a geological level, it also fosters a relationship built on innovation and understanding between the geological fields and the contracting side of things.
The comprehensive curriculum balanced technical theory with field immersion. Day 1 introduced students to essential drilling methodologies, mud mixing fundamentals, and rigorous drill site safety protocols. On the days to follow, the training moved directly to fieldwork, where students engaged with an active drill rig crew for core recovery. This layout allowed them to explore the technical environment firsthand, including specialised core logging, core orientation, data recording, and advanced digital logging systems.
The outcome was a resounding success, with students praising the opportunity to apply classroom theory within a live field environment. Being exposed to the practical side of drilling allowed them to better connect the dots as to why specialised equipment and techniques are utilised, strengthening them for the working environment in their industry for the future.
