About DMT

Understanding the subsurface soil profile is crucial for successful geotechnical projects. At GeoGroup, we're committed to providing cutting-edge solutions for site characterization. One of our newest services is Dilatometer Testing (DMT), a powerful tool for assessing soil properties. We offer three distinct DMT variations: Conventional DMT, Seismic-DMT, and the Medusa DMT, each tailored to specific project needs.

What is the Marchetti Dilatometer Test? The DMT is a reliable in-situ test used to assess the stiffness, strength, and deformation properties of soil. By pushing an inflatable membrane into the soil and applying horizontal pressure, engineers can measure the soil’s lateral stress and its response to deformation. It’s an invaluable tool for projects requiring deep geotechnical insights, such as foundations, tunnels, and embankments.

Benefits:
  • Rapid and cost-effective site investigation.
  • Determination of soil parameters like constrained modulus (M), horizontal stress index (KD), and material index (ID).
  • Accurate profiling of soil layers and identification of weak zones.
  • Reliable estimation of settlement and bearing capacity.
  • Provides data for liquefaction analysis.
Seismic Dilatometer Test (SDMT): The SDMT combines the conventional DMT with seismic measurements, providing shear wave velocity (Vs) profiles alongside standard DMT data.

Benefits:
  • Simultaneous acquisition of mechanical and dynamic soil properties.
  • Accurate determination of small-strain shear modulus (G0).
  • Enhanced evaluation of soil stiffness and dynamic behaviour.
  • Improved assessment of liquefaction potential and seismic site response.
  • Provides the ability to obtain Vs30 data.
Medusa Dilatometer Test (Medusa DMT):The Medusa DMT is a specialized technique that enhances the standard DMT by incorporating multiple pressure readings during the membrane expansion. This allows for a more detailed characterization of soil behaviour.

Benefits:
  • Provides a more refined understanding of soil stress-strain relationships.
  • Improved accuracy in determining soil strength and stiffness parameters.
  • Enhanced identification of over-consolidation and stress history.
  • Better data for complex soil conditions.
